Lesson I

Incipit liber secúndus Machabæórum

Lesson from the second book of Machabees

2 Mac 1:1-6

2 Mac 1:1-6

To the brethren the Jews that are throughout Egypt, the brethren, the Jews that are in Jerusalem, and in the land of Judea, send health, and good peace. May God be gracious to you, and remember his covenant that he made with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, his faithful servants: And give you all a heart to worship him, and to do his will with a great heart, and a willing mind. May he open your heart in his law, and in his commandments, and send you peace. May he hear your prayers, and be reconciled unto you, and never forsake you in the evil time. And now here we are praying for you.

℟. Adapériat Dóminus cor vestrum in lege sua et in præcéptis suis et fáciat pacem in diébus vestris: * Concédat vobis salútem, et rédimat vos a malis.

℟. The Lord open your hearts in His law and commandments, and send peace in your days. * May He grant you salvation and redeem you out of all evil.

℣. The Lord hear your prayers, and be at one with you, and never forsake you in the time of trouble.

℟. Concédat vobis salútem, et rédimat vos a malis.

℟. May He grant you salvation and redeem you out of all evil.

Lesson II

2 Mac 1:18-19

2 Mac 1:18-19

Therefore whereas we purpose to keep the purification of the temple on the five and twentieth day of the month of Casleu, we thought it necessary to signify it to you: that you also may keep the day of Scenopegia, and the day of the fire, that was given when Nehemias offered sacrifice, after the temple and the altar was built. For when our fathers were led in Persia, the priests that then were worshippers of God took privately the fire from the altar, and hid it in a valley where there was a deep pit without water, and there they kept it safe, so that the place was unknown to all men.

℟. Exáudiat Dóminus oratiónes vestras, et reconciliétur vobis, nec vos déserat in témpore malo, * Dóminus, Deus noster.

℟. The Lord hear your prayers, and be at one with you, and never forsake you in the time of trouble * Even He, the Lord our God.

℣. Give you all an heart to serve Him, and to do His will.

℟. Dóminus, Deus noster.

℟. Even He, the Lord our God.

℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui Sancto.

℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.

℟. Dóminus, Deus noster.

℟. Even He, the Lord our God.

Lesson III

Evaristus was by birth a Greek Jew, and held the Popedom in the reign of the Emperor Trajan. He it was who divided among the Priests the titles of the Churches in the city of Rome, and commanded that seven Deacons should attend the Bishop when he was executing his office of Gospel preaching. He it was who commanded, in accordance with the tradition of the Apostles, that marriages should be celebrated openly, and that a Priest should be asked to invoke a blessing thereon. He ruled the Church for nine years and three months. He held four Ordinations in the month of December, wherein he ordained seventeen Priests, two Deacons, and fifteen Bishops. Having finished his testimony, he was buried upon the Vatican, hard by the grave of the Prince of the Apostles, upon the 26th day of October, (in the year of our Lord 112.)
